How to get a current, identified Australian occupational licence
Australia has strict safety standards and requirements for licensed occupations. The following information sets out the steps required to get a licence.
You will receive an OTSR if you complete a skills assessment through a TRA-approved RTO. You can receive an OTSR in the following licensed occupations:
- Air-conditioning and Refrigeration Mechanic
- Electrician (General and Special Class)
- Plumber (General).
The OTSR records the technical skills demonstrated against the relevant Australian VET qualification. To receive an Australian VET qualification for that occupation, you must also undertake:
- Australian context gap training, and
- a period of supervised employment in the specific trade.
Once you have an OTSR, you can apply for a provisional licence. This will allow you to work under supervision while completing gap training.
You can apply through state and territory licensing regulators for a provisional licence. you will need to meet other non-skill requirements as well.

You may need a Certificate III Australian VET qualification for a full licence. The name and conditions may differ depending on the state or territory you wish to work in.
Please note, a licence does not always allow you to become a contractor. Contractor's licences generally need further training and more experience.
